A wedding is one of the most important events in a couple’s life. Storing its memories in the form of photographs is right on the top of the list of plans for the wedding. Wedding photography is something that has evolved into a few categories over the years. You need to understand and give a name to what you want from your photography.

1. Choosing the right guy for the job
When you see an image of a wedding album that you love, ask your self why you liked it. Portrait photographers tend to make people pose before they shoot, and will often bring in lighting with them. You would get good poses, and no awkward moments. It is always better to work with a professional rather than with a friend who is a photo enthusiast, so it is a bad idea to try and save money on the photographer. Of late, it has become popular to use a photojournalist for the job. Photojournalists never pose people and tend to shoot candid images which are a true representation of the mood that was ambient at the wedding. This is currently the hot favorite with couples getting married.

2. The Right Gear
A wedding photographer would typically get a digital SLR camera or else a medium format squarish camera for the job. He may bring a few lights which would need to be set up before the ceremonies begin. There are still some photographers who prefer to use film. This is more or less his business, and it is not good to try and control what the photographers use. But here is a tip – professionals generally do not use compact cameras other than for scouting purposes. If you feel that the photographer does not have adequate equipment, there is no harm in discussing this with the person.

3. The Black and White Option
Black and White has suddenly re-emerged as a favorite medium for wedding photography. It is normally the photographer who decides which images would be printed in black and white and which in color, but you can definitely request a few particular ones in monotone. Usually the professionals of today prefer to shoot everything in digital color, and later change selected images to black and white.

4. Personality
The personality of any photographer is reflected in his or her work. Do hold an informal interview with the photographer – you do not want a person who seems antisocial and reserved. You would want an outgoing person with a pleasing personality for your wedding photography. On the other hand, you wouldn’t want someone who is interfering and self centered as well. Some photographers insist on ruining the best moments by interfering with ceremonies and speeches. So try and get the person with the right personality, which would be a balance of both extremes mentioned here.

Everyone knows there is a certain form and etiquette to follow when composing and putting your wedding invitations in the mail.  And while styles may differ, there are some accepted minimums you should follow. 

Make sure time is on your side

Generally speaking you should have your wedding invitations in the mail six weeks prior to your wedding.  You should allow even more if there are any special circumstances involved.  If you’re planning a destination wedding or a wedding around the holidays you might want to give your guests a little more time. 

Your save-the-date cards can be a big help here, too.  As soon as you know the date and the venue, you are welcome to get your save the dates in the mail.  I’ve worked with brides who have sent the save the date and hotel information as early as 6 to 8 months ahead of the invitation.  Giving your out-of-town guests as much notice as possible ensures that they will have time to make plans, take time off from work if necessary and be there for your big day. 

What else goes into the envelope?

Don’t forget to include either an RSVP card or another method for your guests to RSVP easily. You should include a reply card with a stamped envelope so your guest can let you know if they will be attending.  More and more brides are sending their guests to their wedding website to RSVP and posting more and more information there.  While it can be acceptable to mention wedding registry information on your website, it is never acceptable to mention this anywhere in your paper wedding invitation. 

Your wedding website can be a great resource for your guests, but it is not an excuse to slack off on the rules.  Be considerate and make of each guests feel welcome with a proper, paper wedding invitation. 

The details

It is widely accepted that you not use any abbreviations on any part of your wedding invitation – with the only exception being for ‘Mr. and Mrs.” So, if you are inviting your uncle the physician and your aunt, the correct address would be ‘Doctor and Mrs. Smith.’

This continues to hold true for the date and time of your event.  For example ‘Sunday the twenty third of October at half past five in the evening’ would take the place of Sun. Oct. 23rd at 5:30pm. 

This continues to hold for the address on the outside and the reply card of your invitation.  There is no St., Ave, or Apt #, but there is always Street, Avenue and Apartment number.   The only exception to this rule is the comma that occurs between city and state – ‘Atlanta, Georgia’ is perfectly acceptable.  Atlanta, GA is not. 

There also should not be any punctuation on your wedding invitation.  Again, the one exception to that is the punctuation that occurs after Mr. and Mrs.  Your wedding invitation should read like an elegant, formal request, not a series of sentences. 

Proper Wording 

There are many styles and ways to word the actual invitation; you should make sure you consult an expert for your particular situation.  Traditionally, a bride’s family was the ‘host’ and thus mentioned first on the invitation.  Currently, there are many, many different ways to invite friends and family to your wedding.  Often brides and grooms will host and not mention parents at all.  The groom’s parents may be mentioned if they are hosting, parents of blended families, can be mentioned; the possibilities are endless.  Consult the wording guide at MyExpression.com for wording suitable for your unique situation. 

How to invite

Addressing your guests on your wedding invitation envelope is important also.  When addressing an envelope to a single guest, it is not necessary to note ‘and guest’ on the envelope.  If inviting an unmarried couple who live at the same address include both of their names on their own line.  If inviting two people who live at the same address, but are room mates, send two separate invitations. Obviously, a married couple should be addressed as ‘Mr. and Mrs.’ or with their appropriate professional titles.

You’ve booked the venue, you’ve invited the guests. The clothes and flowers are all chosen and the table plans have been pored over. All in all, you’ve made every arrangement to ensure that the day goes well not just for you but for all your friends and family. But what about the photos?

These top tips will help you to get the photos of your dreams from the day of your life.

1. Don’t rule out doing it yourself. Surprised? You probably don’t expect to feed the guests yourself and few people these days make their own outfits, so why wouldn’t you hire a professional photographer to take the photos or film the whole event?

For starters, nobody knows your friends and family like you do, except for them themselves. Many professional photographers stipulate that no one else is allowed to take pictures at your wedding – after all they want you to buy as many pictures from them as you can. But professional photographers tend to concentrate on posed pictures of the ‘wedding party’ post-vows and whilst we may want a record of how fine we looked, those stiff group shots never sum up the feel of a day like a picture of a loved one laughing or revellers on a dance floor. By allowing your friends and family to take their own shots, you can get those candid shots that a professional would never think to take.

2. Appoint two family members to be head photographers. Why two? Unless your families know each other very well, the chances are that each photographer will show a bias towards the people they know. So whilst the groom’s family are in every shot, the bride’s might be neglected. Most families have at least one person with a photography hobby that they’d love an opportunity to practice. You might think the day is all about you, but a wedding is a huge celebration of your commitment and in years to come you’ll enjoy looking at the pictures of your friends and family enjoying themselves. Yes, you want some great shots of you and your spouse looking your very best, but don’t neglect the guests!

3. Put a disposable camera on every table at the reception and offer a prize for the best photos. Sounds unconventional? Well, you may find a few unwanted snaps come development time, but this ups the chance that the cameras will be filled. Quite often people forget about the cameras after the first bottle of wine is opened and at the end of the event only a few pictures may have been taken. By offering a token gift for each filled camera brought to you at the end of the night you’ll be sure of having photos that show what happened after the vows have been said and the posed shots are over.

4. Encourage your friends to bring their cameras and get them to email digital shots to you afterwards or forward their pictures by post. Once the wedding is over you’ll realise just how little time you got to spend with each guest and it’s far better to have as many pictures to choose from as possible of your big day, particularly if you plan to print them for an album later. Don’t forget to ask when you write your thank yous.

5. Remember that even the best laid plans can go awry. Having a photo of that ripped veil or Uncle Bob drunk (again) under a table or the pageboy picking his nose at the critical moment will one day be something you can laugh about when the photos come out. If you do decide to go the ‘unprofessional’ route of wedding photos, the good thing about using amateurs is that you won’t be relying on just one person to produce the goods. Because even professionals can get it wrong and if that happens, the chances could be that you’ll have no record at all.
